Tuesday August 5 2008 18.30 Evening Walk

Location: Porlock    Fee: No charge

3 part event. Park Central Car Park [north of Methodist Chapel free between 18.00 & 10.00 hours] [Public Conveniences in Central Car Park]

1. View former orchard adjoining car park, ‘seedy bud apple planted ‘50s (will be subject of restorative pruning winter 2008-9); pear Pitmaston Duchess; fig; maiden ‘Ashmeads Kernel’ apple ordered from Adams Apples to be planted winter 2008

2. Dovery Manor garden/orchard providing that contractors have sufficiently completed works @ Dovery Manor and site is safe to visit will be an opportunity to view the HLF supported scheme.

(Phase 1) 7 maiden apples planted 2008); (Phase 2) will be planted winter 2008-9 (& include pears, plums, damson, quince, & re-plant medlar removed to avoid contractor damage, more apples generally on dwarfing (MM106) stock; and will be pruned & trained appropriately.

3. Sparkhayes Farmhouse, Porlock. David & Jackie Latham has kindly offered an opportunity to view their recently acquired former orchard site where but 2 old pear trees remain. D & J have ambitious plans to re-establish the orchard with various new fruit trees. The site has been cleared, grass cut, some levelling done, clover rich re-seeding emerging. An opportunity to consider some of the various challenges & issues involved.

 Toilet facilities available in farmhouse. David & Jackie have kindly offered tea or coffee, providing numbers are not too large.

Tuesday 12 August 19.30 ‘So you wish to plant an Orchard’,

Location: Carhampton (Small Hall) Fee £5 (OL members £4)

Planning, creating or re-establishing an orchard. End purpose of planting eat-cook-drink landscape enhancement.

Site selection, ‘sward management’, spacing, rootstock choice, variety selection, presence or absence of livestock, the joys & problems of some animals & birds; protection of trees against deer, rabbits & stock.

If folk wish to order trees for 2008-9 planting early ordering essential as stock availability is finite.

Thursday 28 August 2008 19.30 Committee Meeting

Location: Carhampton Village Hall, Large Hall

To establish a working Committee for E & WS G activities, determine responsibilities & decide who does what.

Date TBA (hopefully August-September) 2008 ‘Somerset Apples’

with Liz Copas  venue & visit Old Cleeve Village Community Orchard adjacent to ‘Lysaght Memorial’ Village Hall in Old Cleeve to find & view such old varieties as exists. See OL Newsletter for date & time

 Saturday 4 October 2008 (14.00-17.00) Holnicote Harvest

Guided NT event to witness harvest in woodlands & orchards finishing @ Piles Mill to sample apple pies made with the diverse varieties (£4/£1 children)

Saturday 18 October 2008 (10-00-17.00) Carhampton Apple Day

Annual event @ Carhampton Community Orchard

Saturday 13 December 2008 10.00-15.00 ‘Restorative Pruning'
